Updating the Firmware and PMB Portable for MHS-PM5/PM5K

Please update the MHS-PM5/PM5K firmware and install its internal software “PMB Portable” as follows.
Note:
“Memory Card” means the following memory cards recommended on the camera’s Handbook.
“Memory Stick PRO Duo” (Mark2) / “Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo”
SD Memory Card / SDHC Memory Card (Class4 or over)

Update the Firmware
  1. Download the firmware
  2. Format the Memory Card with the camera
  3. Connect the camera via USB
  4. Copy the firmware to the Memory Card
  5. Start updating the firmware
  6. Turn on the camera

Update the Firmware
1.Download the firmware
 
  1. Click the button below to download the firmware.

  2. [SDV5091S.bin]
    (9.37MB(9,830,400bytes))

  3. Save the downloaded file [SDV5091S.bin] on the Desktop of the computer (recommended).
 
2.Format the Memory Card with the camera
 
  1. Connect the camera that is turned off to the computer with the USB connection support cable (supplied), and charge the battery until the Power/Charge lamp turns off.
    Disconnect the USB connection support cable, and turn on the camera.

  2. Insert the Memory Card into the camera and format it.

    How to format
    Press the MENU button on the camera, and select the items as follows.
    Setup->Memory Card Tool->Format->OK

Note:
Note that formatting irrecoverably erases all the data in the Memory Card, including even protected images.
It is recommended to back up the image data in the Memory Card to the computer before formatting.
If you use the Memory Card formatted with the computer, the firmware update may not be completed successfully.
Be sure to format it with the camera.

  1. When completed, keep the Memory Card inserted in the camera.
 
3.Connect the camera via USB
 
  1. USB Mass StorageRotate the lens portion or press the ON/OFF button to turn on the camera.

  2. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB connection support cable (supplied).
    [USB Mode / Mass Storage] is displayed on the LCD screen.

  3. The computer detects the following three drives.
    Windows Mac OS
    Removable Disk(D:)* Untitled
    Removable Disk(E:)* NO NAME
    PMBPORTABLE(F:)* PMBPORTABLE
    *The drive letters vary depending on the computer environment.

    The Memory Card drive where the firmware will be copied is as follows.
    Windows: [Removable Disk] with the drive letter which comes first in alphabetical order
    (“D” in the above example)
    Mac OS: [Untitled]

    * If [LUN Settings] is set to [Single], the detected drive is the Memory Card.
 
4.Copy the firmware to the Memory Card
 
  1. Double-click the drive icon for the Memory Card to open.

  2. Copy the firmware [SDV5091S.bin] to the Memory Card.

  3. Disconnect the camera as follows.
    1. Windows XP Windows Vista, 7
      Windows XP Windows Vista, 7
      Double-click the disconnect icon on the task tray.


    2. Click [Stop].
    3. Confirm the device on the confirmation window, then click [OK].

  4. *When you use Mac OS, drag and drop the icon of the Memory Card or the drive icon to the "Trash" icon before disconnecting.

  5. Disconnect the USB connection support cable from the camera.
 
5.Start updating the firmware
 
  1. Confirm the battery icon on the upper-left corner of the LCD screen shows(full charge).

  2. Rotate the lens portion or press the ON/OFF button to turn off the camera.

  3. While holding the MENU button, rotate the lens portion or press the ON/OFF button to turn on the camera.

  4. UpdatingUpdating the firmware starts automatically.
    [Updating] and the animated circle arrows appear on the LCD screen.

  5. When the screen turns black after approximately 15 seconds, the update is completed.


Note:
Never turn off the camera nor remove the battery or Memory Card while updating.
Otherwise, the camera may become inoperative.
 
6.Turn on the camera
 
  1. Rotate the lens portion or press the ON/OFF button to turn on the camera.

  2. Confirm the power is turned on and the camera starts working properly.


Note:
If the firmware update is not completed successfully, or something is wrong with the camera after the update, please consult your local authorized Sony service facility.
Please format the Memory Card used for the firmware update again before using it for shooting.

Install PMB Portable (Windows)
Please use Windows for the following operations.

1.Download PMB Portable
 
  1. Click the [Download] button to download the program.

    [PMBPWIN52_Upgrade1004a.exe]
    (3.52MB(3,695,904bytes))
 
2.Install PMB Portable
  Before you start, login as a user with administrative privileges.
  1. Turn on your camera, and connect it to the computer using the USB cable.

  2. Confirm that "PMBPORTABLE" appears in [Computer] ([My Computer] for Windows XP) of your computer.

  3. Double click the downloaded file to start installation.
    Follow the instructions in the screen.

Please use Mac OS for the following operations.

1.Download PMB Portable
 
  1. Click the [Download] button to download the program.

2.Install PMB Portable
  Before you start, login as a user with administrative privileges.
  1. Turn on your camera, and connect it to the computer using the USB cable.

  2. Double-click the downloaded file.
    *It is normally saved in the Download folder.
    Follow the instructions in the screen.
