NEX-3/NEX-5 firmware upgrade (Mac OS)
  • When performing the firmware upgrade, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adaptor during the upgrade; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
1.Download the upgrade file
Click on one of the files below (NEX-3V3_Update1010a.dmg or NEX-5V3_Update1010a.dmg) to begin download.
Please save the downloaded file onto the Desktop of your computer (recommended).

2.Start up Firmware Updater
  1. Double-click the downloaded file ([NEX-5V3_Update1010a.dmg] for NEX-5 and [NEX-3V3_Update1010a.dmg] for NEX-3) .
    Do not connect the camera yet at this point.
  2. Double-click the [NEX-3V3_Update1010a] (or [NEX-5V3_Update1010a]) icon which appears on the Desktop.
  3. Double-click the [FirmwareUpdater] icon.
  4. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account. (Figure 2-1)

3.Check the USB connection mode
According to the instruction on Firmware Updater, select [Menu] - [Setup] - [USB Connection] on the camera, and check if [Mass Storage] is selected (Figure 3).
If the mode other than [Mass Storage] is selected, please select [Mass Storage].

4.Connect the camera to the computer
  1. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

    Note When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.
  2. Click [Next] on Firmware Updater. Figure 4 appears on Firmware Updater, and Figure 5 appears on the LCD screen of the camera.

    Note From now on, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed.

5.Check if the upgrade is required
  1. After confirming the screens on Figures 4 and 5, click [Next]. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen. (Figure 6)
  2. After confirming [Current version] is [Ver.1] or [Ver.2], click [Next].

6.Reset the camera
  1. The screen below appears.

  2. Press the center of the control wheel to execute.

    Note This operation will turn off the screen. Please proceed to the next step.

7.Start the upgrade
  1. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen on Figure 10 appears.
  2. Click [Run] to start the upgrade.
    The progress bar appears while upgrading (approximately 5 minutes).

    Note Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.
8.Complete the upgrade
When the upgrade is completed, the screen on Figure 11 appears.
Click [Finish] and disconnect the USB cable.

Note Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.
9.Check the firmware version
Follow the instruction below to confirm the firmware version is Ver.03.

Select [Menu] - [Setup] - [Version] on the camera.
The firmware version is displayed (Figure 12).
