Expanding the high end of the flash sync speed range

You can expand the high end of the flash sync speed to 1/400 second when shooting with the full-frame view angle, and to 1/500 second when shooting with the APS-C view angle.
Since the aperture value can be made smaller by expanding the high end of the flash sync speed, you can use a flash to shoot images in a blurry background. Furthermore, you can capture a moving subject using a fast shutter speed with the flash while reducing camera shake.

Setting method

  1. Shooting mode
    Turn the mode dial and select M (Manual Exposure) or S (Shutter Priority).
  2. [Shutter Type]
    MENU→ (Shooting) → [Shutter/Silent] → [Shutter Type] → either [Auto] or [Mechanical Shutter]
    • When [Auto] is selected, the shutter type is set to mechanical shutter at the time of shooting with a flash.
    • When [Electronic Shutter] is selected, the flash sync speed will not be expanded regardless of the settings.
  3. [Flash Sync Spd. Prty.]
    MENU→ (Exposure/Color) → [Flash] → [Flash Sync Spd. Prty.] → either [Auto] or [On]
    • When attaching a flash manufactured by Sony that has support for a Multi Interface Shoe (sold separately): [Auto] or [On]
    • When connecting a flash (sold separately) to the (Flash sync) terminal: [On]
  4. [Exposure step]
    MENU→ (Exposure/Color) → [Exposure Comp.] → [Exposure step] → either [0.3EV] or [0.5EV]

    When you shoot in the full-frame size, the high end of the flash sync speed you can expand to is 1/400 second if [0.3EV] is selected, whereas the high end is 1/350 second if [0.5EV] is selected.
  5. Shooting
    MENU→ (Shooting) → [Image Quality/Rec] → [Shooting] → desired setting.
    • When shooting with the full-frame view angle: [Auto] or [Off] (Flash sync speed is 1/400 second.)
    • When shooting with the APS-C view angle: [Auto] or [On] (Flash sync speed is 1/500 second.)

Live View display when the high end of the flash sync speed range is expanded

If you set the shutter speed to 1/400 second (1/500 second when using the APS-C size dedicated lens) after a flash is attached to the camera, the (flash) icon will be displayed with the shutter speed setting value as shown below.

Continuous shooting when the high end of the flash sync speed range is expanded

When the high end of the flash sync speed range is expanded and if you perform continuous shooting in the (Continuous Shooting: Hi+) mode or (Continuous Shooting: Hi) mode by setting the shutter speed to 1/400 second (1/500 second when shooting in the APS-C view angle), the maximum speed of continuous shooting may decrease.
