E-mount lenses
When an E-mount lens is mounted on the camera, the continuous shooting speed and whether or not AF/AE tracking occurs will differ according to the shooting conditions, such as the focus mode setting and the lens used.
Please see the tables below.
The continuous shooting speed is the initial value of the camera when shipped from the factory.
Continuous shooting speed and AF/AE tracking
When the focus mode is set to AF-C, the exposure tracks the subject during continuous shooting with no particular settings needed. For AF-S, DMF, and MF, the exposure during continuous shooting will similarly track the subject when [AEL w/ Shutter] is set to [Off].
However, with some lenses, the aperture value remains locked at the value of the first shot when shooting continuously at 60 images/second or 120 images/second. In this case, you can ensure the appropriate exposure to match the changing subject brightness during continuous shooting by setting the ISO sensitivity to AUTO or setting the shooting mode to P or A.
Settings of continuous shooting | Focus mode: AF-C | Focus mode: AF-S/DMF/MF |
---|---|---|
Continuous Shooting: Hi+ | 120 images per second at maximum The focus tracks the subject. *1*2*3*4*5 See here for compatible lenses. |
120 images per second at maximum The focus does not track the subject. |
Continuous Shooting: Hi | 30 images per second at maximum The focus tracks the subject. *1*2*3*5 See here for compatible lenses. |
30 images per second at maximum The focus does not track the subject. |
Continuous Shooting: Mid | 15 images per second at maximum The focus tracks the subject. *1*2*3*5 See here for compatible lenses. |
15 images per second at maximum The focus does not track the subject. |
Continuous Shooting: Lo | 5 images per second at maximum The focus tracks the subject. *1*3*5 |
5 images per second at maximum The focus does not track the subject. |
1: This is the speed when [Aperture Drive in AF] is set to [Standard]. When [Aperture Drive in AF] is set to [Focus Priority], the continuous shooting speed may be slower. Also, the speed of continuous shooting decreases when you shoot with a flash.
2: The continuous shooting speed differs depending on the attached lens.
3: When [Aperture Drive in AF] is set to [Standard] or [Silent Priority] and the F-value is greater than F22, the focus is locked to the setting in the first shot.
4: When [Aperture Drive in AF] is set to [Focus Priority], the F-value is greater than F22, and the continuous shooting speed is [120 images/s] or [60 images/s], the focus is locked to the setting in the first shot.
5: The focus does not track the subjects when the SEL16F28 lens is attached.

6: The lens body requires a software update.
7: During continuous shooting at 60 images/second or 120 images/second, the aperture value of the lens is fixed at the aperture value set for the first image. Either set ISO sensitivity to AUTO or use the P/A shooting mode to ensure appropriate exposure when the subject brightness changes during continuous shooting.
10: Update the camera’s system software to Ver.2.00 or later before use.

Continuous shooting at maximum 120 images/second with AF/AE tracking
Even when the camera is configured with the example settings below, it is still possible to continuously shoot 120 images per second at the maximum as long as the camera is attached with a lens that supports continuous shooting of 120 images per second at the maximum.
Camera Settings Example
- Focus mode: AF-C
- Continuous Shooting: Hi+
- [Aperture Drive in AF]: [Standard]
- Shutter speed: 1/250 – 1/80000
- Aperture value: F22 or smaller (bright)
- Image Size: L
- Images: [Fine] (Set [RAW File Type] to [Compressed] for RAW images.)
Hint
- The continuous shooting speed may become slower depending on conditions such as the surrounding brightness.* However, the continuous shooting speed can be maintained by setting [Priority Set in AF-C] to [Release].
This effect tends to occur when the minimum aperture value is not small (dark) or when a teleconverter lens is attached.
