What Does This Do?

This utility updates the system software and provides the following benefits:

  • Supports Android 8 for the remote power on function from PlayMemories Mobile.
  • Improvement overall stability of camera

It is necessary to update included accessory Live View Remote "RM-LVR3" for who has Action Cam "HDR-AS50R".

IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® HDR-AS50. Do not install this utility with any other model.
    WARNING!!: This system software update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous system software version after updating this system software. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this system software, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • IMPORTANT: Don't allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change these settings, refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:

    A computer with:

    Device power supply:

    The device which carried out full charge.

    • Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-BX1. The update can be performed only when the remaining battery level is (three marks) or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery.
    • Do not remove the battery during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.

    USB cable supplied with the camera:

    • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
      IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • Disable the sleep function in advance.

Determine if Your Device Needs the Update

Follow the instruction below to check the system software version. This update is only for HDR-AS50 cameras that currently have a system software Version 1.00. If your camera system software version is already Version 1.01, this update is not necessary.

Check the system software version

Press the UP button or DOWN button to select [MENU] - [SETUP] - [Ver.], then press the REC/ENTER button.

Prepare the Device for the System Software Update

When performing the system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-BX1.

Do not remove the battery or USB cable during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
3.
Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
4.
Prevent your computer from sleeping beforehand.
5.
Do not be connected to other apparatuses except your computer.

Download and Update the System Software

Download the update file
Download the Update file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference). Please save the downloaded file onto the Desktop of your computer (recommended).

Start up System Software Updater
ⅰ.
Double-click the downloaded file [Update_HDRAS50V101.dmg]. Do not connect the camera yet at this point.
ⅱ.
[Update_HDRAS50V101] is expanded.
ⅲ.
Double-click the icon.

To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account.
ⅴ.
System Software Updater starts up.

Connect the camera to the computer
Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
ⅰ.
Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable and turn on the power of the camera.
ⅱ.
After confirming the above, click [Next] on System Software Updater. The below screen appears on System Software Updater.

Note:

From now on, never turn off the camera until the software update is completed.

4.
Check if the updating is required
ⅰ.
The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the screen.

Upgrade is required

Note:

If the below screen appears, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click [Finish]. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack, and then turn on the camera again.

After confirming [Current version] is [Ver.1.00], click [Next].

The camera automatically reset

The following screen appears.

6.
Start the update

After automatically resetting, the below screen appears and the update starts. The progress bar appears while updating (approximately 15 minutes).

Note:

Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while updating.

7.
Complete the update

After finishing the update, the PC screen will be changed to the below screen. Also the camera automatically reboots, which may take a few minutes. Please wait until the same screen on the camera LCD appears as one just before starting the software update. When the screen appears, push [Finish] button and disconnect the USB cable.

Check the system software version

Press the UP button or DOWN button to select [MENU] - [SETUP] - [Ver.], then press the REC/ENTER button.
